Jeffrey Kahane Jeffrey Kahane, piano and Gabriel Kahane, piano & voice

A “mix-tape” style offering of old and new musical encounters: world-class pianist, Jeffrey Kahane, is performing in partnership with his son, Gabriel Kahane, avant-garde composer and songwriter, punctuated by father-and-son anecdotes and banter.  The repertoire will include Bach’s Chorale Prelude O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig, Schubert’s Impromptu in G-Flat major, D.899, Brahms’ Intermezzo Op. 119 No. 1 and No. 3, and works by Benjamin Britten and Charles Ives for the piano.

These "six hip virtuosi" (Time Out New York) play a unique combination of instruments: string trio, flute, clarinet and trumpet. This exciting orchestration has inspired an expanding repertoire of works by some of today's indie rock luminaries: Annie Clark (St. Vincent), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Ryan Lott (Son Lux). yMusic’s debut album, "Beautiful Mechanical," pairs these compositions with pieces by prominent young composers Judd Greenstein, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Gabriel Kahane.

PREMIERE OF MUSIC FROM THE UPCOMING STAGED SONG CYCLE “25 Addresses in Los Angeles"

Co-commissioned by Laguna Beach Music Festival and Brooklyn Academy of Music

“25 Addresses in Los Angeles” is the musical equivalent of a short story collection, as Gabriel Kahane excavates twenty-five significant architecture sites in Los Angeles in his new composition. With pieces addressing a wide range of iconic southern Californian institutions—from Dodger’s Stadium to Chavez Ravine to In-N-Out Burger—“25 Addresses in Los Angeles” is ultimately an affectionate musical portrait of the city of Los Angeles and it’s need to continually erase and recreate itself. Check out Gabriel Kahane’s blog post at PSOC to learn about his inspiration.

The evening’s repertoire features Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 2 in A minor (Op. 13), Haydn’s String Quartet No. 5 in D Major (Op 76) and Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44.
